This week, many months after I started the mural I finished a 75 metre wall. The long delay was caused by the rain that just wouldn’t go away at the start of the year. As a mural artist, there are a few things which are necessary to complete a wall, and one of those things is sunshine. After Cr. Paul Gleeson painted the wall, it was in desperate need of some colour and I think the koalas, lorikeets, possums and other wildlife should brighten the school and bring some cheer to the students and staff.
January got off to a gutsy and gory start with a five day project at Brisbane Pop Culture, Newstead. Turtle and Em from Brisbane Tattoo requested an Invader Zim and Zombie theme to advertise their latest venture, Brisbane Pop Culture (previously Brisbane Relics), a store dedicated to pop culture collectables. Turtle and Em were great to work for and I really enjoyed the positive feedback from all the passerbys. The Brisbane summer sun and rain tried to get the best of me, but I managed to thrash out some zombies and aliens, regardless of the weather.

This last week saw me create a Tromp’e Loeil cityscape mural at Portside Wharf, Hamilton. Portside Wharf’s operational organisers required an image which depicted the iconic river and the bustling metropolitan image of Brisbane to decorate the newly renovated interior of the Customs area for the large cruise ships. I designed the mural site specific matching the surrounds and to be viewed on approach rather than directly infront. Applying the 5.4m long X 2.6m high mural predomitaley with brushes and limited use of areosols due to the interior setting made for a very busy but rewarding week.
Last week I returned to Birkdale and worked with the great team at Birkdale Breakers Swim Club. The breif was to enliven the pool complex ahead of sign on and the upcoming swimming season. I designed the artwork to appeal to the popular learn to swim program and incorporated a beach theme as suggested by the club. Once again I enjoyed working at Birkdale and wish to thank the staff, students and pool committee for the fantastic feedback.
On Saturday the 16th of June Redbank Plains State School had a working bee where volunteers painted the school and I created a mural on a seven metre wall. The theme of Safe Respectful Learner was based on the school values.
It was great to return to Redbank Plains State School and complete another mural. I had a very busy day getting the welcome mural painted but had a great response from students, staff and community stakeholders. I also feel privelaged to apply the animal totems endoresed by traditional owners.
I was recently given the task to add some old school funk to an aspiring young break-dancer’s studio. The Gold Coast garage had been converted into a mini studio, complete with a tape deck wall. I had a really good time, met a cool young dude and I was even allowed to crank my own beats while I worked. Life is good.
It was fantastic to compete in my third consecutive International Mural Fest in Sheffield, Tasmania. People of all ages came to view the paint off in Mural Park over the week long event. The support from visitors and locals provided a great atmosphere which led to an enjoyable and productive week. I drew from inspirations such as Tasmazia and World of Marbles to create a mural titled “Ravenous Machine”. It was great to work amongst the calibre of artists from accross Australia and abroad. To view the nine artists murals check the Mural Fest website as it has all the action from the mini murals, progress shots and much more. Read more
