Central Highlands Multicultural Festival

The Central Highlands Multicultural Festival which is in it’s tenth year gets bigger and better with each festival and this year was no exception. This time, Sauce facilitated a series of workshops incorporating aerosol art and hip hop culture leading up to the festival with the young people of Emerald and Blackwater. On the evening of the event there were more workshops and Sauce created several canvas pieces which the festival will auction off at a later date to raise funds for future festivities. 

Sauce also caught up with Ethic Ill, an Emcee and DJ from Emerald who performed at the event. The festival was definitely a highlight of the tour, as Sauce was able to meet so many varied members of the public and by painting at these types of events, it allows Sauce to break down any stereotypes associated with aerosols. It was also encouraging to see another generation of young people learn and grow from the experiences of the workshops. Not to mention the management of the festival. It takes a mammoth effort to create this type of festival and it would not be possible for the event to flourish without all of the hard work from the management team or the volunteers, so a massive thanks goes out to all of them.

Emerald May - June 2014

 

Things may have seemed quiet in the studio for the past month, but Sauce has been anything but quiet. Last month, he toured Central Queensland with thanks to Anglicare CQ and spent the past month flat out like a lizard drinking. Anglicare celebrated thirty years of service this year, and we realised that Sauce has been working with the organisation for the past decade. 

For this trip, the Anglicare CQ team from Emerald kept him busy with countless workshops for the young people of Emerald and he painted a few murals too. The locals of Emerald also keen to have their walls painted and Sauce managed to smash a few commissions too. 

It wasn’t all work and no play. Hayley (the most effective and efficient Youth Worker this side of the Black Stump), was generous enough to take Sauce to Fairburn Dam for the day where he indulged in some wake boarding! The Emerald and CQ crew are always a pleasure to work with, and Sauce is already planning to head back out again. Next stop: Barcaldine.

Life and Death

We’ve had some varied feedback about our A-frame today, and I would like to thank those who spoke to me about their feelings regarding the sign’s content. 

This link explores the same themes provides insight into the issue of popularity and death. 

At the studio, we’re not about sledging Margaret Olley or her legacy, but what we are advocating for is support for living artists, so their careers can flourish. And as an organisation which is living in the shadows of other well funded facilities it is a challenge to run a successful arts business. 

We’ve exhausted every other polite way to demonstrate these experiences to the ‘powers that be’, and this is one way of creating critical debate about this topic.

Stencil Art Workshops in The Sauce Studio.

Yesterday, we held our first stencil art workshops in our studio in Murwillumbah. The turnout was great and the participants were an interesting collection of young and old. The seven participants watched Sauce paint a quick demo and spent the rest of the afternoon creating their own canvas with various stencil forms and patterns. It was fantastic to have some older participants step outside their comfort zones and explore a new medium. We can’t wait for the next workshop so we can meet some new faces!

Central Queensland Tour

Did you hear the news? I’m famous in Central Queensland! During August and September I spent two and a half weeks traveling and painting my way through Central Queensland. During that time, I managed to complete ten murals and assist students to complete fifty-five canvasses which used twenty-two litres of acrylic paint, fifty-two spray cans and sixty nozzles. 

After a stop over at Ink Addict in Tara  I headed onto Emerald where I smashed an aerosol art demonstration at Central Highlands Multicultural Festival. I squeezed in an illusion style floor mural for the team at Anglicare CQ in the first few days, before running stencil workshops in Emerald, Rubyvale and Springsure. During the tour, I completed murals at Capella State High, Springsure State School, Blackwater State High, the Emerald Neighborhood Centre and the Emerald Kick Wall.

As usual, it was an absolute blast to work with the Anglicare CQ team. They always look after me and it’s great to see the young people enjoy different art forms. There is far too much to show for one blog post, so here is a taste of some of the completed works.

The Benefits of a Mural (Part Three)

Welcome to the final installment of the Benefits of a Mural posts. In this post, I want to talk about the versatility of aerosol art. 

 

Aerosol art is not limited to walls, graffiti styles or large murals. The skills and knowledge associated with mural art and aerosol art can be utilized to create innovative stage backdrops, set design and feature walls for the home. By using detailed cutouts, large canvases and some illusionary details, the ‘almost mural’ can provide a feature which is unmatched by stickers or cardboard-cutouts. 

 

Event signage and temporary instillations are another great way to incorporate aerosol and mural art at your event or venue. The process of aerosol art is one based on speed, making it an ideal concept for works or projects which have short timeframes.

Breaka Burleigh Pro 2013

Today I made some waves at the Breaka Burleigh Pro and painted an artwork which will be auctioned with the proceeds going to charity. There were plenty of questions and cameras in the background while I was painting. I even managed to fit in an interview for the radio. It was nice to be a part of the action. 

Goodna Youth Service

It was great to contribute to the recent scooter comp at Riverview supported by Goodna Youth Service and Ipswich City Council. I completed aerosol art demonstrations throughout the day creating unique prizes whilst enjoying the close competition. Hopefully I will have some more pics coming soon.

Pretty in Pink

There was a good turnout at Springfield for the skate competition despite the precipitation. Competition was fierce with crazy tricks displayed at the Youth Week event. Completing “Pretty in Pink” in record time was challenging but I enjoyed applying acrylic to canvas. Thanks to Goodna Youth Service and all of the volunteers and skaters for the support.
